Tariffs’ oppression on farmers: Mushroom Producers’ Association – Nepal launches...
Farmers have been facing problems for years while transporting straw, the main raw material for mushrooms and livestock farming, from various parts of Nepal to Madhesh Province.
Even when transporting only about 4 tons of straw in a cargo vehicle with a capacity of more than 10 tons, security personnel, including traffic police, have been unnecessarily stopping, questioning, and obstructing the movement under various pretexts.
Due to such mismanagement, the price of straw has increased drastically, production costs have increased, and farmers are facing difficulties in mushroom cultivation and animal husbandry.
The association has condemned the police repression and arrests of farmers during a peaceful protest in Pathalaiya.
“The tendency to suppress and discourage the campaign to increase production using local raw materials is unacceptable,”
the statement said.
Farmers say that the increase in the cost of production of mushrooms and milk has made it difficult to provide the required quantity of products to consumers. The association concludes that this situation has affected the livelihood of farmers and the entire agricultural business.
The association has called on stakeholders, farmers and farmer organizations across the country to stand in a nationwide movement against injustice and oppression.
