The term “mushroom” derived from the French word “mousseron” which means moss or mousse. The moss is the delineation between edible and poisonous fungi that is not clear-cut. In this concern, mushroom is edible, poisonous or unpalatable.
Mushroom is also called toadstool which means the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus. It typically grows above ground on the soil. The standard name “mushroom” refers to the cultivated white button mushroom so that the word “mushroom” also called fungi that have a stem (stipe), a cap (pileus), and gills (lamellae, sing. lamella) on the underside of the cap. “Mushroom” also describes a variety of other gilled fungi, with or without stems, therefore the term describes the fleshy fruiting bodies of some Ascomycota. The gills produce microscopic spores which help the fungus spread across the ground or its occupant surface.
